Designing With Web - Part 3: week 1

Reinvent museum visit experience for kids using gaming

Group 21

Project 1: Enhancing a visit with virtual reality

Context

Museum visits can be boring for children. How do we make them fun? How do make them interested in the art that surounds them?

Museums have developped into many different formats. There are museums about pretty much anything these days. But the classics are still alive and well. We find it important to make the newer generation realize the history that came before them but with tools that they connect with.

Nowadays, children have a very small attention span because they are used to rapid videos, flash images and larger than life action movies and video games. This makes them disconnect with reality and the slow pace of normal life. Museums are here to remind us of timelessness and art, and its ability to stand still throughout changing times.

Target

Who is our target? Is there a target age group ?

In our project, we are targeting two age groups of children. Firstly a very young group, from 4 to 12 with a very simple, colourful and easy to follow game. And then an older age group from 12 to 17 that will have a harder, more question oriented game to follow.

Service offered

A new way of enjoying museums

We have decided to take a fresher look at museum visits. What we offer is a game. Like a treasure hunt. The child will start at a first art piece and will need to answer a question about it. Every question brings a new clue to the child to move on to the next piece. It is impossible to move on in the game without acquiring some knowledge about the art in the museum. Another interesting aspect to the game is that is can be downloaded onto any phone. The phone is then placed into the VR mask and the experience can be enjoyed by anyone !

Project 2: Visit a museum from your classroom

Context

when? where? who? why?

When a whole class cannot travel to the museum, for example if they do not live in big cities, in the provinces, and renting a bus and driving 3 hours is not possible, because it is too expensive and too complicated, being able to visit a museum via an apllication seems to be the solution. It allows students to have access to culture, to see museums that they might not have the opportunity to see in real life.

From their classroom, teachers will take their students to visit the greatest museums, such as the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, the Centre Pompidou... Students will discover works of art while having fun. It's a new way to visit a museum.

Target

for whom?

This project is aimed at teachers, who have primary school classes. If they cannot organize school outings, they can use this application to visit the museums of their choice. This project is therefore used by pupils aged 6-8 and 9-11, thanks to their teachers.

One could also consider using this application for people with disabilities, or who cannot travel to Paris, but who still wish to visit a museum.
Service offered

what? how?

The offer is simple. A visit to the museum and the paintings via an application. This can be done on a telephone or via a computer. You move through the museum in a virtual way, a small explanation of the paintings is made by a hologram in a funny and understandable way according to the age group of the children. You choose at the beginning of the tour which age group you belong to (teachers for 6 - 8 years, 9 - 11 years or adult) and the tour adapts to you. In order to motivate and interest the children, games are also proposed, where they can earn points while getting involved. For example, they can win points if they manage to recognize the artist (Picasso for example) or to find an object on a canvas. The aim is to educate them and introduce them to culture from an early age.
